When china held the first census since the post-1949, namely in 1953, the Chinese population counted 582 million inhabitants, while in the fifth census in 2000, China's population doubled, exactly 1.2 billion jiwa.'s, the government implemented the one child policy (in effect since the year 1979).who were legally married only permitted to have one child. The results of this policy, China succeeded in its goal of decreasing fertility rates and relatively stable; in 1971 Chinese women on average have 5.4 children, whereas in 2004 only
1.7 children.
